Michigan November Crop Production Forecasts Up

Michigan producers are anticipating record corn yields this year, according to Marlo Johnson, Director, USDA NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. The November Crop Production Report is based on conditions as of November 1, 2018. Some highlights of the report follow:

- Michigan corn yield is up 7 bushels from last year to 166 bushels per acre. Total production is expected to be 315 million bushels. If realized, the Michigan corn yield would be a record high. As of October 28, Michigan corn was 46 percent harvested, up 8 points from the 5-year average.

- Michigan Soybean yield is forecast at 48.0 bushels per acre. The yield is up 5.5 bushels from 2017, and production is forecast at 110 million bushels. Soybean harvest was 65 percent complete as of October 28, down 4 percentage points from the 5-year average.

- Sugarbeet growers anticipate a yield of 30.1 tons per acre, up 4.9 tons from last year. Production is forecast at 4.46 million tons. Sugarbeet harvest in Michigan was 58 percent complete as of the week ending October 28, up 6 points from the 5-year average. Cooler weather allowed for beet piling to begin prior to the end of October.

- U.S. corn production is forecast at 14.6 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the October forecast but up less than 1 percent from last year. Based on conditions as of November 1, yields are expected to average 178.9 bushels per acre, down 1.8 bushels from the October forecast but up 2.3 bushels from 2017. If realized, this will be the highest yield and second highest production on record for the United States. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 81.8 million acres, unchanged from the previous estimate but down 1 percent from 2017.

- U.S. soybean production is forecast at a record 4.60 billion bushels, down 2 percent from the October forecast but up 4 percent from last year. Based on November 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 52.1 bushels per acre, down 1.0 bushel from last month but up 2.8 bushels from last year. Area for harvest in the United States is forecast at 88.3 million acres, down slightly from last month.
