Michigan Potato Production Up 1 Percent

Michigan's 2018 potato crop is forecast to be 17.4 million hundredweight (cwt), up 1.0 percent from a year ago, according to Marlo Johnson, director of the USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office.

Planted acres, at 48,000, increased 1,000 acres from last year. Harvested acres, at 47,000, were up 500 from 2017. Average yield, forecasted at 370 cwt per acre, remained unchanged from the previous year. The first potato stocks estimate for the 2018 crop year will be released December 19, 2018.

Nationally, production of fall potatoes for 2018 is forecast at 417.5 million cwt, up 4 percent from 2017. Area harvested, at 913,100 acres, is up 1 percent from the 2017 estimate. The average yield forecast, at 457 cwt per acre, is up 13 cwt per acre from a year ago.
