Operation Freedom Outdoors Essay Winner Named
Michigan Ag Connection - 07/25/2017

Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors announced that Corey Lanz of Lyons, Michigan, is the winner of its first annual David Pollie Classic, an essay contest to award an Action Trackchair to a deserving person with mobility limitations.

Lanz was injured in a diving accident, which left him paralyzed from the chest down. Having a Trackchair -- an all-terrain wheelchair that helps those with mobility challenges enjoy the outdoors -- will allow him once again to enjoy spending time outdoors with his young sons.

The essay contest was named after David Pollie, a man who loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

"After an injury in his youth, Pollie's Trackchair allowed him to regain the independence he needed to live life to its fullest," said Tom Jones, Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors project coordinator. "Through this contest, we wanted to provide this kind of freedom to someone else who had no way of obtaining one of these life-changing wheelchairs."

More than 30 outdoor enthusiasts submitted essays in the hope of winning a Trackchair. Jones said that contest judges reviewed each entry, looking for that person who loved the outdoors as much as David Pollie. He said that the decision process was not an easy one, as each of the entrants is very deserving.

Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors would like to thank all contest entrants and encourage them to keep in touch as the organization continues its mission of providing outdoor recreation opportunities for individuals with health challenges.

Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors is a cooperative partnership between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Eisenhower Center, Camp Liberty, the Passing Along the Heritage Foundation, the Brain Injury Association of Michigan, the Safari Club International Foundation, the Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council, Michigan United Conservation Clubs, Disabled American Veterans, Michigan Outdoor Mobility and others. Its mission is to provide improved outdoor recreation opportunities for individuals with health challenges, and to coordinate a support network that facilitates their recovery through connecting with nature.
