Traverse City L&P First in U.S. to Use USDA Loan
Michigan Ag Connection - 09/24/2020

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has provided a $1.8 million loan to Traverse City Light and Power to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy.

"I commend Traverse City Light and Power for their vision and courage to take the lead in helping their customers achieve greater energy efficiency," said USDA Rural Development State Director Jason Allen. "This is another example of how USDA is able to partner with rural communities in new and innovative ways to improve their quality of life."

The funds were provided through the Rural Energy Savings Program, which provides loans to rural utilities and other companies who provide energy efficiency loans to qualified consumers to implement durable cost-effective energy efficiency measures.

Traverse City Light and Power is the first municipal utility in the nation to receive RESP funding to support an On-Bill Financing Program. The on-bill program is aimed at assisting residential customers in financing energy efficiency and/or renewable energy improvements. Potential upgrades include more efficient furnaces, air conditioners and other appliances.
