The Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) announced Dr. Shafkat Khan as director of conservation. Khan will oversee the DZS's field conservation programs and help advance this significant part of the organization's mission.

Before joining the DZS, Khan served as a visiting assistant professor with Project Dragonfly, a conservation biology graduate program at Miami University of Ohio. The program focuses on inquiry-driven learning and shared action to support a more collaborative and sustainable future.

"It is a privilege to be a part of the DZS team, which is so dedicated to the conservation of wildlife here at home and around the world," said Khan. "I am looking forward to building on the history and strength of the DZS in species-based conservation and involving the communities of greater Detroit."

Dr. Khan earned a Ph.D. in ecology from University of Georgia. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in environmental science from Goshen College, Goshen, Ind.
