Safely Dispose and Recycle Pesticide Containers at No Cost
Michigan Ag Connection - 06/05/2023

Michigan's Pesticide Container Recycling Program is making it easier than ever for pesticide users to safely dispose of their containers while prioritizing environmental stewardship. This cost-free initiative, a collaborative effort between the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program, the Michigan Agri-Business Association, the Ag Container Recycling Council, and pesticide users across the state, encourages the proper recycling and disposal of pesticide containers to minimize environmental risks.

Since its inception in 1993, the program has seen tremendous success. Over 2.92 million pounds of plastic containers have been collected, and participation continues to grow. Last year, 60 agribusinesses participated in 114 collection events, resulting in the successful recycling of 196,080 pounds of empty, properly cleaned pesticide containers.

Participating in the program is simple and requires following a few essential steps. Pesticide users can bring their containers, including plastic drums up to 55 gallons, for disposal. The containers must have their labels, caps, and any loose materials removed. After use, the containers should be rinsed three times or pressure-rinsed, with the rinse water potentially used in an appropriate diluted tank mix. It is crucial to store rinsed containers in a dry area away from wells and water supplies until pickup or transport to a designated recycling location is arranged.

To facilitate collection, participants are encouraged to tie clean containers together in large bundles using rope or twine. Storing these bundles in a dry area away from wells and water sources is essential. Large plastic bags for jug storage are no longer distributed due to their significant waste generation.

Businesses or collection sites involved in the program can easily request a pickup of stored and clean containers by contacting G. Phillips and Sons at 248-961-3360 or sbruinsma@gphillipsandsons.com, or reaching out to 563-942-0391 or pickup@gpsagrecycle.com.

Michigan's Pesticide Container Recycling Program promotes responsible plastic waste management, protects the environment from potential contamination, and fosters sustainable practices within the agricultural industry. By participating in this program, pesticide users contribute to the conservation of natural resources and the well-being of future generations. Through the collective efforts of pesticide users and the support of various organizations, Michigan is leading the way in sustainable pesticide container disposal and recycling, setting an inspiring example for other agricultural communities to follow.
