Michigan Meat Animal Cash Receipts Surge in 2023

By Andi Anderson

Michigan's meat animal industry witnessed notable shifts in cash receipts in 2023, with cattle experiencing a significant surge while hog revenues saw a modest decline.

According to Marlo D. Johnson, Director of the USDA NASS Great Lakes Regional Office, Michigan's cattle and calves cash receipts totaled an impressive $832.5 million in 2023, marking a substantial 32 percent increase from the previous year. This surge was accompanied by a notable uptick in cattle and calf marketings, totaling 519.7 million pounds, representing an 8 percent rise from 2022.

In contrast, Michigan's hog cash receipts totaled $456.9 million in 2023, reflecting a modest 7 percent decrease from the previous year. Despite the decline in revenues, hog and pig marketings experienced a slight increase, totaling 710.5 million pounds, up 2 percent from 2022.

Nationally, the trends were somewhat different. Cash receipts from marketings of cattle and calves across the country experienced a significant 17 percent increase, reaching $101 billion in 2023. However, total marketings of cattle and calves saw a slight decrease, totaling 58.8 billion pounds, down 5 percent from the previous year.

Conversely, national cash receipts from hogs and pigs witnessed a notable 11 percent decline in 2023, totaling $27.2 billion. Despite the decrease in revenues, hog and pig marketings saw a 4 percent increase, totaling 43.9 billion pounds.

These contrasting trends in Michigan and across the nation reflect the dynamic nature of the meat animal industry, influenced by various factors such as market demand, production practices, and economic conditions. As the industry continues to evolve, stakeholders must adapt to changing dynamics to ensure sustainability and profitability.
