MSU Organic Farmer Training Program Opens Applications

MSU Organic Farmer Training Program Opens Applications

By Andi Anderson

Michigan State University has opened applications for its 2027 Organic Farmer Training Program (OFTP), providing aspiring and beginning farmers with a valuable opportunity to gain practical farming experience, business knowledge, and community connections.

The program is designed for new farmers, farmworkers, homesteaders, and educational gardeners who want to develop the skills needed to build successful and sustainable farming operations. Through a combination of online learning, field experiences, and hands-on activities, participants will learn how to create farm businesses that align with their goals, values, land resources, and target markets.

The OFTP will feature a hybrid learning format that combines classroom instruction with real-world farm experiences. Participants will take part in online educational sessions, field trips to sustainable farms, and hands-on learning opportunities across several Michigan locations. Learning sites include Keep Growing Detroit, the MSU Student Organic Farm in East Lansing, New City Farm in Grand Rapids, and Edible Flint.

The program emphasizes practical skills such as crop production, farm management, business planning, and community engagement. Participants will also have opportunities to visit numerous sustainable farms and interact with experienced farmers and agricultural professionals.

One of the program’s greatest strengths is its supportive learning environment, where individuals from diverse agricultural backgrounds work together to develop farming knowledge and leadership skills. Former participants have highlighted the value of the experience in helping transform ideas into practical farm plans.

“Before OFTP I had a vision, but when I left I had a plan.”

Applications are currently being accepted for the Detroit, East Lansing, and Grand Rapids learning sites. Organizers note that some locations may fill quickly due to high demand.

The program also offers several scholarship opportunities to help reduce financial barriers for participants. These include scholarships for farmers in Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Flint, along with other funding opportunities from agricultural organizations and workforce development programs. Additional grants and educational assistance programs may also be available to eligible applicants.

To apply, prospective participants must submit an application form, a resume or curriculum vitae, two letters of recommendation, and participate in a farm visit or online meeting. Individuals seeking scholarship assistance must complete the appropriate scholarship application by the designated deadline.

Program fees include tuition along with additional costs for books and learning materials. Multiple payment options are available, including card payments, checks, educational awards, workforce training programs, and other approved funding sources.

By combining hands-on instruction, farm visits, business education, and mentorship, the Organic Farmer Training Program helps aspiring farmers gain the confidence and practical experience needed to launch and grow successful agricultural enterprises. The program continues to serve as an important pathway for developing the next generation of organic and sustainable farmers.
