Smart Irrigation Field Day Helps Growers Improve Water Management

Michigan State University Extension is inviting nursery and greenhouse professionals to attend the Effective Irrigation in Nursery Production Field Day on Oct. 2, 2026, at Hortech, Inc. in Nunica, Michigan. The educational event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will provide participants with valuable information on improving irrigation practices, water quality management, and environmental sustainability.

The field day is designed to help growers learn practical techniques for achieving better irrigation uniformity, maintaining clean irrigation systems, and promoting responsible water use. Participants will gain hands-on experience and hear from industry experts about the latest approaches to efficient nursery production.

A key highlight of the event will be demonstrations led by Dr. Youngsuk Dong and Riley Johnson, who will explain how growers can improve the uniformity of overhead sprinkler irrigation systems. Proper irrigation management can help increase crop quality, reduce water waste, and support more sustainable production practices.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to explore Hortech, Inc.’s innovative green infrastructure projects. The tour will include a close look at the company’s living wall, rooftop green roof systems, and various green roof designs. Participants will also learn how solar panels can be integrated into green infrastructure systems to improve environmental performance.

The educational program features presentations from several industry and academic specialists. Chris Howe, Assistant General Manager of Hortech Inc., will provide an overview of the company’s operations and lead a green roof tour. Dr. Debabrata Sahoo of Clemson University will discuss pond maintenance practices that support irrigation efficiency. Dr. Tom Fernandez of Michigan State University will present sessions on irrigation water cleaning methods and the use of bioreactors in nursery operations.

The event will conclude with a presentation by Ximena Figueroa, Conservation Technical Assistance Program Technician with the Ottawa Conservation District, who will explain the Michigan Agricultural Environmental Assurance Program and its connection to irrigation requirements under Generally Accepted Agricultural and Management Practices (GAAMPs).

The field day will begin with refreshments and networking, followed by educational sessions, demonstrations, and a complimentary lunch provided by MSU Extension.

Participation is free, but registration is required. Attendance is limited to 30 participants, making early registration important for those interested in attending.

Overall, the event offers nursery and greenhouse growers an excellent opportunity to learn practical water management strategies, improve irrigation performance, explore innovative green infrastructure projects, and strengthen environmental stewardship efforts within their operations.
