USDA Boosts Coopersville Downtown Growth with New Community Investment

USDA Boosts Coopersville Downtown Growth with New Community Investment

By Andi Anderson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a new investment aimed at supporting community growth and economic development in rural Michigan. The funding will help improve public infrastructure in downtown Coopersville and create new opportunities for community engagement.

The project received a grant of $41,500 through USDA Rural Development programs. The funding has been awarded to the Coopersville Downtown Development Authority in Ottawa County. The organization will use the grant to transform an underutilized area in the downtown district into a modern multi-purpose community space.

According to the project plan, the new space will serve as a flexible, multi-level venue designed for public gatherings, performances, and various community activities. The location is strategically positioned near several popular attractions and amenities, including a pocket park, a splash pad, local businesses, and a historic train attraction. This central location is expected to encourage greater public participation and increase activity in the downtown area.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Michigan State Director Dom Restuccia highlighted the importance of community investment and economic growth in rural regions. He stated, “Promoting economic development is one of our strategies to revitalize rural Michigan communities. Thanks to the leadership of President Donald Trump and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, we are creating new opportunities for sustained growth with communities like Coopersville.”

In addition to USDA support, the Coopersville Downtown Development Authority has committed $9,000 toward the project. This local contribution demonstrates community involvement and dedication to improving public spaces that can benefit residents, visitors, and local businesses.

The funding was provided through the Rural Business Development Grants program. This program helps strengthen rural communities by offering assistance for projects that support business development, training, and economic advancement. Grants can be awarded to public organizations, nonprofit entities, and tribal governments that primarily serve rural areas.

Projects funded through this program often focus on enhancing infrastructure, encouraging economic activity, and improving quality of life. Community spaces such as the one planned for Coopersville can become important gathering places that support festivals, public events, cultural programs, and everyday social interaction.

Investments in rural communities play a significant role in encouraging local development and attracting new opportunities. Improved public spaces can help create a welcoming environment, support small businesses, and strengthen community connections.

The Coopersville project reflects ongoing efforts to build stronger rural communities through targeted infrastructure improvements. By converting an underused area into a vibrant public venue, the project is expected to contribute to downtown revitalization, expand community activities, and support long-term economic growth in the region.
