Boost Farm Profitability with MSU Extension Grain Gains Course

Boost Farm Profitability with MSU Extension Grain Gains Course

By Andi Anderson

Profitability remains the core goal for every farm business, and for grain producers, that starts with understanding how to identify and secure good market prices.

To support farmers in achieving stronger returns, Michigan State University Extension (MSU Extension) has launched Grain Gains: An Introduction to Grain Marketing, a new self-paced online course designed to strengthen marketing confidence and decision-making.

This virtual training introduces participants to the core principles of grain marketing, including how to evaluate commodity markets, use pricing tools, and develop marketing plans tailored to individual farm operations.

The course is designed for both new marketers and experienced producers seeking a refresher on key marketing strategies.

Grain Gains includes a blend of short video lessons, informative articles, and interactive exercises, organized into four detailed learning units:

  • Unit 1: Grain Marketing Environment
  • Unit 2: Pricing Decision Tools
  • Unit 3: Pricing Decision Chart and Market Scenarios
  • Unit 4: Creating a Grain Marketing Plan

Upon completing all content modules and evaluations, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion. The course can be accessed at any time, allowing learners to progress at their own pace.

To celebrate the launch, MSU Extension is offering an introductory registration fee of $25 through December 31, 2025. Beginning January 1, 2026, the regular price of $50 will apply. This one-time payment provides lifetime access to all course content and materials.

Grain Gains is part of MSU Extension’s DEMaND Series (Developing and Educating Managers and New Decision-makers), which equips current and future farm operators with financial and business management skills.

The series builds capacity for the next generation of producers navigating the challenges of modern agriculture.
