Boost Grain Profits with Grain Gains Online Marketing Course

Boost Grain Profits with Grain Gains Online Marketing Course

By Andi Anderson

For grain farmers, profitability depends on more than harvest yields—it also relies on smart marketing strategies. Recognizing this, Michigan State University Extension has launched a new self-paced virtual course, Grain Gains: An Introduction to Grain Marketing, to help producers learn the fundamentals of securing profitable grain prices.

The Grain Gains course provides participants with a strong foundation in grain marketing. It covers commodity markets, pricing decision tools, and how to create a marketing plan tailored to a farm’s unique needs.

Farmers new to marketing, as well as those looking for a refresher, will benefit from the course’s practical approach, designed to build comfort and confidence in marketing decisions.

Course content includes a blend of video presentations, informational articles, and interactive activities. Divided into four main units, the program explores the grain marketing environment, introduces pricing decision tools, examines market scenarios, and guides learners through creating a complete marketing plan.

Participants who complete each unit and submit evaluations can earn a Certificate of Completion.

MSU Extension is offering an early registration discount of $25 through December 31, 2025. Beginning January 1, 2026, the registration cost will return to the regular $50 fee. Enrollment provides lifetime access to the course materials, giving farmers a long-term resource they can return to as markets evolve.

Grain Gains is part of MSU Extension’s DEMaND Series (Developing and Educating Managers and New Decision-makers). This program helps the next generation of farm operators strengthen their business and financial management skills.

By equipping farmers with knowledge of grain markets and decision-making strategies, the series supports long-term success in an increasingly competitive industry.

With Grain Gains, MSU Extension is empowering farmers to make better marketing decisions, manage risks effectively, and ultimately improve their profitability in today’s grain markets.
