Jaime Luke Joins MSU AFRE as Assistant Professor of Agriculture

By Andi Anderson

Jaime Luke has joined Michigan State University’s Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics (AFRE) as an assistant professor. A first-generation college graduate and Missouri farm native, Luke combines a strong background in agriculture with a passion for economics and outreach.

She recently completed her Ph.D. in agricultural economics at Kansas State University in December 2024. During her time at KSU, Luke worked on livestock-focused research and engaged in extension activities, experiences she plans to continue in her new role at MSU.

Luke’s position at MSU is equally divided between research and extension. She aims to connect with Michigan farmers, understand their challenges, and use her skills to develop useful economic strategies. “My goal is to really get out into Michigan agriculture and understand what the big questions are,” she said.

While her work in Kansas was largely centered on the beef industry, Luke is excited about Michigan’s diverse agricultural output. She believes that producers across different sectors face similar challenges and is eager to support a wide range of commodities.

Currently, Luke is exploring the economic feasibility of anaerobic digesters for small dairy farms—a topic she hopes to research further with graduate students. This reflects her commitment to sustainability and helping producers make informed decisions.

Luke values collaboration and is inspired by the expert faculty at MSU. “There’s just so much knowledge in this faculty,” she shared. “It’s exciting to be part of a place where ideas are shared and supported.”

As she begins her career in academia, Luke looks forward to building strong relationships with Michigan producers, conducting impactful research, and contributing to the advancement of agriculture in the state.

The AFRE department and the broader MSU community are excited to welcome her and support her future projects.
