MDARD Announces Specialty Crop Block Grant Program for Michigan

Michigan farmers, businesses, and organizations can now apply for grants to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops in the state.

Program Details:

  • Grant Program: Specialty Crop Block Grant Program
  • Administered by: Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD)
  • Funding Source: USDA Agricultural Marketing Service
  • Deadline: February 8, 2024, 11:59 p.m. EST
  • Maximum Award: $100,000 for research proposals; $125,000 for marketing, training, and education proposals

Eligible Projects:

  • Projects must address challenges and opportunities related to Michigan's specialty crops, including fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticultural crops, and nursery crops.
  • Examples of eligible activities: promotion, marketing, research, nutrition, trade enhancement, food safety, food security, plant health programs, education, increased knowledge and consumption, improved efficiency and reduced costs of distribution systems, environmental concerns and conservation, product development, good agricultural practices, good handling practices, and good manufacturing practices.

Eligibility:

  • Non-profit organizations
  • Local, state, and federal government entities
  • For-profit organizations
  • Organizations must be legal entities recognized by the IRS and reside and/or conduct business in Michigan

Selection Criteria:

  • Proposals will be evaluated based on their potential to:
    • Enhance the competitiveness of Michigan's specialty crops
    • Produce measurable impacts for the industry as a whole
    • Benefit all stakeholders in the industry
    • Address critical needs and priorities

Application Process:

  • Proposals must be submitted through the MiAgGrants System.
