Michigan's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Director, Tim Boring, recently embarked on a journey through Western Michigan to commemorate Agritourism Month. This initiative recognizes and celebrates the significant economic and social contributions of agritourism to the state's farms and communities. Director Boring's tour included visits to Swiss Lane Farms, Schwallier’s Country Basket, and Farmhaus Cider Co.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer kick-started the festivities by proclaiming October as Agritourism Month in Michigan. This celebration emphasizes the vital role of agritourism in supporting the local economy and fostering community connections. It encourages people to experience the rich offerings of Michigan, from farms and wineries to cider mills and farm markets.
Director Boring expressed his enthusiasm for these agritourism opportunities, which are available in every Michigan county. He emphasized the joy of visiting a farm, from apple picking to pumpkin patch adventures. Director Boring acknowledged Governor Whitmer's 'Make it in Michigan' budget, which backs local farmers and producers in their quest to diversify and explore new opportunities.
During his tour, Director Boring visited some remarkable farms that embody the spirit of agritourism.
- Swiss Lane Farms is deeply rooted in family and faith, striving for success through innovative farming practices and a dedicated team that values both hard work and their cows. Their mission centers on growth in the dairy industry.
- Schwallier’s Country Basket began as a humble roadside produce stand in 1989 and has blossomed into a vibrant farm market in the heart of Michigan's apple country. It features a corn maze, petting farm, pumpkin patch, cow train, wagon rides, and more.
- Farmhaus Cider Co. is renowned for crafting a diverse range of ciders on a 150-year-old family farm. The owners embrace change, challenge the norm, and proudly do things their way.
As 2023 unfolds, MDARD will engage with Michigan's food and agricultural businesses, seeking ways to support their growth and prosperity. This commitment reinforces the importance of agritourism in Michigan's agricultural landscape.
