Michigan Potato Industry Earns Prestigious Extension Partnership Award

Michigan Potato Industry Earns Prestigious Extension Partnership Award

By Andi Anderson

The Michigan Potato Industry Commission (MPIC) has been recognized for its outstanding partnership with Michigan State University (MSU) Extension, receiving the prestigious Key Partner Award. The recognition highlights MPIC's long-term commitment to supporting agricultural research, education, and outreach programs that benefit farmers and strengthen Michigan's agricultural industry.

The Key Partner Award is presented annually to individuals and organizations that make significant contributions to the development, improvement, or promotion of Extension programs. The award honors collaborations that create meaningful impacts for communities, industries, and agricultural stakeholders.

Kelly Turner, Executive Director for MPIC, accepted the award during the Fall Extension Conference held at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing, Michigan. The recognition reflects years of partnership between MPIC and MSU Extension in advancing agricultural innovation and supporting potato producers across the state.

The nomination was submitted by Jeannine Schweihofer, Associate Director for MSU Extension Agriculture Programming, who highlighted MPIC's extensive involvement in Extension programs. In addition to financial support, the organization has actively participated in advisory committees, research review panels, educational events, and strategic planning efforts.

“MPIC has been a longstanding partner of MSU and MSU Extension,” Schweihofer said. “They support critical potato research and outreach that helps Michigan maintain its leadership as the nation’s top producer of chipping potatoes."

One of MPIC's most significant contributions has been helping secure additional funding for two MSU Extension personnel positions and an MSU Mobile Irrigation Lab. These investments have expanded Extension's ability to deliver valuable resources and support to Michigan farmers and agricultural businesses.

The enhanced irrigation program now reaches more than 5,000 individuals each year through educational programs and outreach efforts. In addition, Extension educators regularly provide information to over 2,900 farmers, agribusiness professionals, and agency personnel through newsletters, updates, and educational materials. Field demonstrations have also expanded, giving producers greater opportunities to adopt efficient irrigation methods and water conservation practices.

“MPIC has provided unwavering support for Extension’s applied research and educational efforts,” Schweihofer said. “[They] help ensure that Michigan potato growers have access to the latest science-based information and innovations.”

Beyond research and education, MPIC plays an important role in statewide agricultural initiatives. The organization has consistently supported programs such as Project GREEEN, the Agriculture Resiliency Initiative, and other priorities of the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. It is also an active member of the Integrated Pest Management Alliance and contributes to planning the Montcalm Research Center Field Day, a leading potato research and education event in Michigan.

“These outcomes demonstrate how MPIC’s partnership with MSU Extension has generated meaningful economic and environmental benefits while strengthening the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of Michigan agriculture,” Schweihofer said.

Through continuous collaboration, research support, and educational leadership, MPIC continues to make a lasting contribution to Michigan agriculture, helping growers remain productive, competitive, and prepared for future challenges.
