Michigan wheat growers - register now for summer field day

By Andi Anderson

Calling all Michigan wheat growers! Register now for the 12th annual Summer Field Day at the MSU Saginaw Valley Research & Extension Center (SVREC) on June 25th. This free event is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the latest wheat research funded by your contributions.

"The Field Day allows farmers to see firsthand what's happening with our research," says Jeffery Krohn, chairman of the Michigan Wheat Program board. "We'll explore new wheat varieties, high-management practices, weed control methods, cover crops, and innovative solutions like using wheat to trap soybean cyst nematodes."

Dr. Marisol Quintanilla will share exciting research findings on using wheat as a trap crop for this damaging nematode. You can see her presentation in the field and ask questions directly.

The day kicks off with registration, coffee, and a chance to get your troubled plants diagnosed by Dr. Jan Byrne of the MSU Plant Diagnostics Center. Following introductions, the morning features wagon tours through research plots, with experts like Dr. Christy Sprague discussing weed control and Dennis Pennington exploring high-management practices and plant growth regulators. You'll also learn about clover cover crops, herbicide interactions, and fertility/disease management.

The afternoon offers additional wagon tours focusing on wheat agronomy for high yields (Dr. Manni Singh), new variety releases (Dr. Eric Olson), and Dr. Quintanilla's nematode trap crop research.

After a delicious lunch, Dennis Pennington will provide key reminders for the upcoming Michigan wheat harvest. The event concludes with the awarding of credits for attending (RUP & CCA) and closing remarks.

Register soon to secure your spot at this informative and valuable event for Michigan wheat growers!
