Michigan State University (MSU) will host an international symposium titled “Agricultural Biotechnology for a Better World”, bringing together agricultural leaders, policymakers, researchers, and development professionals from around the world. The event will take place from August 2 to August 5 and is expected to attract more than 90 participants from over a dozen countries.
The symposium is being organized to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the International Agricultural Biotechnology, Biosafety, and Technology Transfer Short Course offered by the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The event aims to promote discussions on how modern biotechnology can help improve food and nutrition security, strengthen environmental sustainability, support economic growth, and enhance livelihoods globally.
The program will begin with a keynote address and welcome dinner at the MSU Henry Center for Executive Development in Lansing, Michigan. Karim Maredia, Associate Dean and Director of the World Agriculture Center for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, will welcome delegates and guests attending the event.
A key feature of the symposium will be a series of expert panel discussions involving MSU faculty members, agricultural specialists, and international leaders. These sessions will focus on important topics influencing the future of agricultural biotechnology and innovation.
The discussion themes will include science and innovation, policy and regulations, technology transfer, commercialization, seed systems, international trade, public acceptance, communication and outreach, as well as education, training, and capacity building. These topics are expected to encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration among participants from different regions and agricultural sectors.
In addition to panel discussions, delegates will participate in breakout sessions and group meetings focused on current issues in agricultural technology. These sessions will provide opportunities for networking, exchanging experiences, and identifying solutions to challenges facing modern agriculture.
The symposium will also include educational tours and field visits. Participants will visit the Michigan State Capitol, MSU research farms, and meet local farmers in Mason, Michigan. These activities will offer practical insights into agricultural research, technology adoption, and farming practices.
On the final day, delegates will gather at the MSU Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Teaching and Learning Facility to discuss recommendations and future opportunities for international cooperation. The closing discussions will focus on strengthening partnerships and advancing biotechnology solutions that support global agriculture.
By bringing together experts from multiple countries and disciplines, the symposium highlights the growing importance of agricultural biotechnology in addressing food production challenges. The event aims to foster collaboration, promote innovation, and encourage the development of sustainable solutions that can benefit farmers, communities, and food systems around the world.
