MSU Innovations Help Farmers Save Water and Improve Profits

Michigan farmers are increasingly relying on advanced irrigation technologies to manage water resources more efficiently, especially during dry growing seasons. Researchers at Michigan State University (MSU) are developing practical tools and services that help growers improve crop production while reducing water and energy use.

One of the leading efforts is being led by Younsuk Dong, Assistant Professor and Irrigation Specialist in the Michigan State University Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. His work focuses on creating affordable and user-friendly irrigation technologies that can be used across a wide range of crops.

Dry weather conditions, including one of the driest Julys on record in parts of Michigan, have highlighted the importance of precise irrigation management. Too little water can reduce crop growth and yields, while excessive irrigation can increase disease pressure, waste resources, and cause nutrient losses.

To address these challenges, Dong and his team developed the Low-Cost Monitoring System (LOCOMOS). The technology uses field sensors to monitor soil moisture, leaf wetness, and environmental conditions. The information is analyzed and delivered directly to growers through a mobile platform, helping them make informed irrigation decisions.

Research conducted between 2021 and 2024 showed that LOCOMOS improved irrigation efficiency in corn and soybean production. The technology increased profits through improved yields and lower energy costs, demonstrating the financial value of precision irrigation.

Another major initiative is the Mobile Irrigation Lab, developed through collaboration between MSU researchers and Extension specialists. The program offers free on-farm evaluations of center-pivot irrigation systems. Experts assess water distribution, pressure, flow rates, and equipment performance to identify opportunities for improvement.

Participating farmers receive detailed recommendations to enhance irrigation efficiency. In some cases, equipment upgrades have significantly improved water application uniformity while reducing water and energy consumption. The program has already conducted assessments across numerous Michigan farms and counties.

Laura Campbell, Senior Conservation and Regulatory Relations Specialist with Michigan Farm Bureau, emphasized the value of these efforts, stating, “Many farmers in Michigan recognize the value of supplementing rainfall with irrigation to increase profitability and protect against seasonal weather challenges.”

Growers have reported positive results from the program. Improved irrigation performance has helped reduce waste, lower operating costs, and increase overall farm efficiency.

MSU researchers are also expanding their work into specialty crops, including apples and other tree fruits. Through ongoing studies, they are evaluating precision irrigation technologies, soil moisture monitoring systems, and water management strategies that can improve fruit quality while reducing resource use.

A newer digital tool, the MSU Irrigation app, provides real-time recommendations using weather data, soil information, and crop-specific requirements. The application alerts growers when irrigation may be needed and assists with scheduling decisions. The platform is already being used across thousands of irrigated acres.

The first year of testing found that data-driven irrigation scheduling methods performed well and helped support efficient water management. Researchers also identified practices such as fertigation and mulch application as useful strategies for improving crop performance.

As weather patterns become more unpredictable, these innovations are providing farmers with valuable decision-making tools. By combining technology, research, and field-based support, MSU is helping producers conserve water, reduce expenses, improve energy efficiency, and maintain strong crop yields.

These advancements demonstrate how modern agricultural research can deliver practical solutions that benefit both farming operations and natural resources, helping build a more sustainable future for Michigan agriculture.
