The Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) at Michigan State University (MSU) made a remarkable impact at the 2026 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) Annual International Meeting held in Indianapolis.
The event brought together agricultural engineering professionals, researchers, educators, and students from around the world to share knowledge, research, and technological advancements.
MSU demonstrated a strong presence at the meeting, with more than 70 Spartans attending the event.
Participants delivered over 60 technical presentations, contributed to professional committees and leadership groups, and took part in several research, design, and robotics competitions. Their involvement reflected the university's commitment to innovation, education, and engineering excellence.
One of the major achievements came from the Alpha Epsilon Chapter in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering at Michigan State University, which received the New Project SeeD Money Award from the National Alpha Epsilon organization.
The award recognized the chapter's efforts in revitalizing its activities and expanding its positive impact on students and departmental programs.
MSU students also earned recognition in research competitions. Macy Schafer secured third place in the Boyd-Scott M.S. Research Competition, demonstrating excellence in graduate-level research and technical presentation skills.
The university's achievements extended to robotics competitions as well. The MSU BAE Agricultural Robotics Team placed fifth out of fifteen teams, showcasing innovative solutions and technical expertise in agricultural robotics.
The competition highlighted the growing role of automation and advanced technology in modern agriculture.
Another notable accomplishment came from the MSU Biosystems Engineering Senior Design Bioretention Project Team. The team was selected as a finalist in the prestigious ASABE Gunlogson Environmental Design Competition and earned third place for its project.
The recognition reflects the team's dedication to developing practical environmental solutions through engineering and design.
Academic excellence was further recognized through the achievements of MSU Biosystems Engineering Doctoral Candidate Boyang Deng, who received the 2026 Graduate Scholarly Achievement Award from the Association of Overseas Chinese Agricultural, Biological, and Food Engineers. The award honors outstanding scholarly contributions and research accomplishments within the field.
The strong performance of Michigan State University participants at the ASABE Annual International Meeting highlights the institution's leadership in agricultural and biological engineering. Through research, innovation, competition, and professional service, MSU students and faculty continue to contribute to advancements that support agriculture, sustainability, and technological development.
These accomplishments demonstrate the value of academic collaboration and hands-on learning while preparing future engineers and researchers to address challenges facing agriculture and related industries worldwide.
