Recent rainfall across southwest Michigan has provided important moisture for field crops during a critical stage of the growing season. Many areas received more than an inch of rain, and forecasts indicate the possibility of additional precipitation in the coming days. Warm temperatures and periodic storms are expected to continue supporting crop growth.
Soybean fields are primarily in the R5 growth stage, where seeds continue filling pods. At this stage, disease symptoms become more visible. Farmers are monitoring crops for white mold, sudden death syndrome (SDS), and brown stem rot. Experts are also encouraging growers to watch for red crown rot, a disease not yet confirmed in Michigan but one that closely resembles SDS and brown stem rot. Suspected cases should be tested to ensure accurate identification.
Corn development is progressing well across the region. Most fields are in the kernel development stages, ranging from blister and milk stages to dough and dent stages. As kernels mature, plants continue to require adequate moisture and protection from diseases. Tar spot was recently confirmed in Allegan County, prompting growers to scout fields regularly. Fungicide applications are generally most effective when made between silking and the milk stage of kernel development.
Pest pressure has remained relatively low. Western bean cutworm moth numbers have declined over recent weeks, reducing the overall threat to many corn fields. However, regular field scouting remains an important management practice.
Potato production is also advancing steadily. Fresh chip potato harvest has increased, and early Russet harvest has begun in some areas. Late blight was detected in St. Joseph County, raising concerns because moist weather conditions can encourage disease spread. Growers are advised to monitor fields closely and protect crops during the final weeks of the season.
Water management continues to be a key priority. Corn and soybeans remain at peak water use, requiring approximately 1.1 inches of water per week. Potato water needs are gradually declining as crops approach maturity. Farmers should account for recent rainfall when scheduling irrigation to avoid applying excessive water. Over-irrigation can increase disease risks, particularly white mold in soybean fields.
Experts recommend using irrigation scheduling tools to improve water efficiency and support crop health. These tools help growers make informed decisions based on weather conditions, soil types, and crop growth stages.
In addition to weather and crop management updates, educational programs continue to support producers. Recent discussions focused on nematode management in field crops, with specialists highlighting crop rotation and genetic resistance as the most effective tools for controlling soybean cyst nematodes.
Overall, southwest Michigan crops remain in generally good condition. Continued rainfall, careful disease monitoring, effective irrigation management, and timely scouting will be essential to maintaining crop productivity through the remainder of the growing season.
