Field crops across Southwest Michigan continue to develop well despite changing weather conditions. Recent rainfall helped improve soil moisture and clear smoke that drifted into the region from Canadian wildfires. Cooler temperatures provided temporary relief, although warmer conditions are expected to return in the coming days.
Soybeans throughout the region are mostly in the early pod development stages, while some earlier-planted fields have entered seed formation. These growth stages are critical for determining final yield potential. Growers are closely watching for white mold, especially in irrigated fields, where disease risk has remained higher than in non-irrigated areas. Timely fungicide applications during the flowering and early pod stages can help reduce disease pressure.
Corn development varies across the region, ranging from late vegetative growth to full pollination. Seed corn detasseling activities continued during the week. As corn enters reproductive stages, farmers are monitoring fields for tar spot, a disease that can affect yield if not managed properly. Current reports indicate low disease risk across most of Southwest Michigan, although cooler temperatures and irrigation can increase the likelihood of infection.
Western bean cutworm activity has also increased in several counties. Farmers are encouraged to scout fields near tasseling and early pollination stages for egg masses and signs of infestation. Early detection remains important for protecting yield potential and reducing crop damage.
Winter wheat harvest and straw baling are nearly complete throughout the region. Following harvest, some producers have already planted soybeans or cover crops to maintain soil health and maximize field productivity.
Potato crops are currently in the tuber bulking stage, which is a period of high water demand. Early-season Russet potato vine-killing operations have begun ahead of harvest. Growers are also monitoring potato fields for aphids, late blight, and vine rot. Continued field scouting is helping producers identify problems before they become serious.
Alfalfa and forage harvesting activities continued during the week as favorable weather allowed farmers to make progress with cutting and baling operations.
Irrigation remains a major priority for producers. Corn at tasseling and silking stages requires approximately 1.4 inches of water per week. Soybeans in reproductive stages require about 1.3 to 1.4 inches weekly, while potatoes need around 1.2 inches each week during tuber development. Adequate moisture during these critical growth stages is essential for maintaining yield and crop quality.
Farmers are encouraged to watch for signs of water stress, including leaf rolling in corn and leaf flipping in soybeans. Irrigation scheduling tools and regular field monitoring can help improve water management decisions.
In addition to crop updates, educational programs continue to provide valuable information for growers. Recent discussions focused on mole drains, a drainage method that improves water movement in heavy clay soils. These practices can help farmers manage wet field conditions and improve long-term soil productivity.
