Michigan's dairy industry is poised for expansion and innovation, thanks to the recently launched Dairy Business Builder Grant. This groundbreaking initiative is a result of a partnership between the Dairy Business Innovation Alliance (DBIA) and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), with funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Designed to invigorate dairy businesses in the state, the grant is a catalyst for growth and progress.
The Dairy Business Builder Grant welcomes applications from small- to medium-sized dairy farmers, processors, and entrepreneurs across Michigan. This program is tailored to foster innovation and diversification, with a focus on four main project categories:
• Dairy Farm Diversification: Encouraging ventures that add value to dairy farms, such as crafting artisanal cheeses, producing yogurt, or creating delectable ice creams.
• On-Farm Processing: Supporting the establishment or enhancement of dairy processing facilities directly on the farm, streamlining production processes.
• Value-Added Product Creation: Nurturing projects that result in the development of novel dairy products or enhancements to existing offerings, ensuring quality and appeal.
• Export Marketing of Dairy Products: Backing endeavors to introduce dairy products to international markets, fostering growth beyond domestic borders.
Eligibility for the Dairy Business Builder Grant is extended to businesses meeting the following criteria:
• Michigan-Based: Applicants must be located within the state of Michigan.
• Small- to Medium-Sized: Businesses falling within this category are eligible.
• Net Income: Businesses with a net income of less than $5 million are qualified.
• Matching Funds: Grant recipients must be able to match the funds with their own resources.
The application window for the Dairy Business Builder Grant is open, with a submission deadline of October 18, 2023. Prospective recipients can submit their applications conveniently via the DBIA website.
