Michigan State University (MSU) has received a significant funding boost to support the modernization of its Plant Science Research Greenhouse Complex. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) awarded more than $16.2 million through its Research Facilities Act Program to advance the university’s ongoing greenhouse renovation efforts.
The grant will be matched by Michigan State University, resulting in more than $32.5 million in additional support for the project. The investment is expected to enhance research capabilities, improve educational opportunities, and strengthen innovation within the agricultural sector.
The Research Facilities Act Program provides financial assistance for the construction, renovation, and modernization of research facilities that support agricultural studies. The program focuses on promoting research, teaching, and extension activities while helping train future scientists, researchers, and agricultural professionals.
The renovated facilities will support studies aimed at improving agricultural productivity, increasing profitability, strengthening domestic agricultural markets, promoting sustainable resource use, and enhancing resilience against pests, diseases, and environmental challenges. These priorities are critical as researchers work to develop solutions for some of agriculture’s most pressing issues.
Matt Daum, associate provost and dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR), highlighted the importance of the funding and the benefits it will provide to students and researchers.
“The USDA NIFA funding will allow our researchers, staff and students to benefit from high-quality greenhouse facilities, and we’re grateful to USDA for recognizing the importance of this project,” said Matt Daum, associate provost and dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR). “We also appreciate the tremendous role our partners have played in securing funding, including legislators at the federal and state levels, as well as our agriculture commodity organizations, business leaders and Michigan’s farmers.”
Over the past several years, approximately $35 million from the State of Michigan and various MSU units has already supported substantial improvements to the greenhouse complex. These investments have enabled the construction of a new headhouse and the installation of advanced environmental control systems, energy-efficient LED lighting, upgraded glazing panels, and taller greenhouse ceilings designed to accommodate larger crops.
As a result of these improvements, nearly 60% of the research greenhouse facilities have either been newly constructed or significantly renovated. However, about 40% of the complex still requires major upgrades. The newly awarded USDA funding will help address these remaining needs and further modernize the facility.
The greenhouse complex serves more than 400 users from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the College of Natural Science. These facilities play a vital role in supporting research projects, educational programs, and scientific discoveries that contribute to the advancement of agriculture.
With continued investments from federal, state, and university partners, Michigan State University is expanding its ability to conduct cutting-edge agricultural research. The upgraded facilities will provide modern resources for scientists, staff, and students while supporting innovations that can benefit farmers, agricultural industries, and communities for years to come.
