Webinar Explains Michigan Peach Production Costs for Growers

Webinar Explains Michigan Peach Production Costs for Growers

By Andi Anderson

Understanding production costs is essential for making sound farm management decisions. To support peach growers and others interested in orchard economics, Michigan State University Extension is offering a webinar at 12 p.m. on Jan. 22, 2026, that reviews the Michigan Peach Cost of Production study.

The one-hour educational session will provide a detailed overview of the findings from a recent study conducted by MSU Extension. The study examines the full range of costs involved in peach production in Michigan, offering valuable insight for both new and experienced growers.

During the webinar, Extension specialists explain the main results of the study, including establishment, production, and harvest expenses associated with peach orchards.

The report covers two major types of operations: orchards focused on fresh market peaches and those producing peaches for processing. This comparison helps growers understand how costs may differ depending on their market focus.

A key part of the session focuses on how growers can use the cost tables included in the study. These tables show per bushel costs and breakeven prices at different yield levels. By understanding these figures, growers can better evaluate whether their current production levels and prices support long term profitability.

The webinar also walks participants through practical examples that show how to adjust the study results to match individual farm situations.

Presenters explain how growers can change assumptions based on their own yields, labor costs, and management practices. This step-by-step approach helps farmers apply general research findings to real-world decisions on their own operations.

In addition to cost analysis, the session emphasizes the importance of planning and risk management. Knowing production costs allows growers to set realistic price targets, evaluate investments, and respond more effectively to market changes.

This educational program is part of the Farm Policy and Risk Management series offered by MSU Extension. The webinar will be recorded and made available online, allowing growers and agricultural professionals to access the information at a later time.

Overall, the webinar provides a clear and practical resource for understanding peach production costs in Michigan. By improving financial awareness, the program helps growers strengthen decision making, manage risk, and support the long-term sustainability of their orchards.
