Boost for Small Meat Processors in 17 States

Boost for Small Meat Processors in 17 States

In a move to counter the consolidation trend in the food production industry, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced $115 million in federal grants for smaller meat and poultry operators in 17 states.

This initiative, part of the administration's efforts to stimulate the sector, aims to support farmers, create job opportunities, and revitalize rural communities.

During the grant announcement event in Des Moines, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack emphasized the need to address the income disparity in farming, with 7.5% of farms currently receiving 89% of farming income.

By providing a greater share of income to small farmers, the USDA hopes to reverse population decline and economic stagnation in rural areas.

The grants include $77 million through a program supporting the establishment or expansion of meat and poultry processing plants.

Notably, $15 million has been awarded to Montana's Mountain West Economic Development to enhance slaughterhouse operations in the Flathead Valley. Additionally, $800,000 has been allocated to the Farmers Union Foundation, benefiting smaller processors in Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Furthermore, the USDA has approved $38 million in funding through a slaughterhouse expansion program, benefiting independent producers in five states.

The states receiving support are Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.

By injecting capital into smaller meat processing facilities, the USDA aims to promote local food production, boost rural economies, and provide consumers with more diverse options.

This investment represents a step toward reversing the consolidation trend that has dominated the industry for decades, offering hope for smaller players and the communities they serve.
