The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a significant investment aimed at supporting economic development, preserving jobs, and strengthening local communities in Michigan. The funding will help maintain operations at the Bay City Doubletree Hotel while contributing to the region’s economic stability.
The announcement was made during an economic development roundtable hosted by Dom Restuccia, Michigan State Director for USDA Rural Development. The event also included discussions on affordable housing challenges facing Michigan residents and highlighted ongoing efforts to support rural economic growth and community development.
Speaking about the initiative, Michigan State Director for USDA Rural Development Dom Restuccia said, “We’re excited to welcome HUD Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development, Ronnie Kurtz, to Genesee County to discuss issues on affordable housing facing Michigan residents. Ensuring access to affordable housing, protecting jobs, and improving Michigan’s rural economy is a top priority of the Trump-Vance Administration.”
He further added, “We’re also excited to announce this loan to facilitate new ownership of the Bay City Doubletree Hotel. This keeps an important local business in operation and has set it on a firm financial foundation for the future.”
Through the USDA Business and Industry Guaranteed Loan Program, Bay City Hospitality Group LLC received a loan totaling $15.36 million. The funding will be used to purchase and continue operating the Bay City Doubletree Hotel, a six-story property featuring 150 guest rooms and banquet facilities.
The hotel plays an important role in the local economy by supporting tourism, business travel, and community events. It currently provides employment for 127 workers, making it a valuable source of jobs in the region. The investment helps ensure these positions are retained while allowing the hotel to continue serving visitors and local residents.
The property had previously entered foreclosure, creating uncertainty regarding its future operations. USDA support helped secure the purchase of the hotel and facilitate a transition to new ownership. In addition to the federal-backed loan, the recipient contributed $3.87 million toward the acquisition.
The City of Bay City also benefits from the hotel's continued operation through utility payments, property taxes, and operating millages. According to estimates, hotel guests contributed approximately $15 million to the regional economy in 2024 through spending on lodging, dining, transportation, and other local services.
The investment reflects USDA’s broader commitment to supporting businesses in rural communities, encouraging job retention, and promoting sustainable economic growth. By helping preserve a major hospitality facility and safeguarding employment opportunities, the funding is expected to provide long-term benefits for Bay City and the surrounding region.
The project demonstrates how targeted investments can strengthen local economies, support community development, and ensure important businesses remain operational while continuing to contribute to regional prosperity.
