Michigan Expands Jobs and Economic Growth Through Major Investments

By Andi Anderson

Michigan is strengthening its economy through major business expansion projects supported by the Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund. These investments are expected to create up to 817 jobs and generate nearly $2 billion in economic activity across the state.

One of the largest projects is fairlife’s expansion in Coopersville, where the company is investing $650 million to add two high-speed production lines for lactose-free milk and protein shakes. The project is expected to create around 200 full-time jobs and is receiving support through state incentives, infrastructure improvements, and agricultural development funding.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, “Companies know that when they invest in Michigan, they succeed.” She noted that the projects will create and retain hundreds of good-paying jobs while supporting economic growth in communities across the state.

Another major investment comes from Chobani, which plans to invest up to $567 million to expand its La Colombe coffee manufacturing facility in Norton Shores. The project will create 337 new jobs, retain 312 existing positions, and support upgrades to regional wastewater infrastructure. It is also expected to significantly increase demand for milk sourced from Michigan dairy farms.

Michigan is also supporting Mitra Chem’s planned battery materials facility in Egelston Township. The project represents an investment of more than $370 million and is expected to create 150 permanent jobs and 600 construction jobs. Meanwhile, Hemlock Semiconductor continues to expand, with plans that could add 180 manufacturing jobs and over 1,000 construction jobs.

State leaders highlighted the investments as key to strengthening Michigan’s agriculture, manufacturing, energy, and technology sectors. Together, these projects demonstrate the state’s commitment to job creation, infrastructure development, supply chain growth, and long-term economic prosperity.
