Learn Easy Tomato Canning at Hands on Extension Workshop

Learn Easy Tomato Canning at Hands on Extension Workshop

By Andi Anderson

Home food preservation continues to be a valuable skill for families looking to enjoy fresh produce throughout the year. For those with an abundance of tomatoes, a special educational workshop will provide practical guidance on safe and effective canning techniques.

The Home Canning Tomatoes workshop is designed to help participants learn the basics of preserving tomatoes at home using approved food safety methods. The interactive program will demonstrate how home canning can reduce food waste while allowing gardeners and consumers to enjoy tomato products long after the harvest season has ended.

Tomatoes are one of the most popular crops grown in home gardens. During peak harvest periods, many households find themselves with more tomatoes than they can immediately use. Proper canning methods offer an excellent solution for preserving this excess produce while maintaining quality and safety.

During the workshop, participants will learn how to use a water bath canner for tomato preservation. Instructors will explain each step of the process, from preparing tomatoes and sterilizing jars to safely sealing and storing finished products. The program will also discuss situations when a pressure canner is the preferred option for preserving certain foods.

The event is designed to be educational and easy to follow, making it suitable for both beginners and individuals with some canning experience. Attendees will gain practical knowledge that can be applied at home and will have the opportunity to ask questions about food preservation techniques.

The workshop will take place on September 29, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the MSU Extension Classroom, located at 2300 E. Grand River Avenue, Suite 111, Howell, Michigan. Registration is required, and interested participants should register before the September 25, 2026 deadline.

The program highlights the importance of using tested and approved food preservation practices. Safe canning procedures help prevent spoilage and ensure preserved foods remain safe for household use.

Individuals seeking additional information about the event can contact Mary Donaldson at morrism4@msu.edu or by phone at (734) 222-3956. Participants may also contact the Livingston County MSU Extension office for assistance regarding appointments and event-related questions.

Educational programs such as this provide valuable opportunities for community members to learn practical life skills while increasing confidence in home food preservation. By understanding proper tomato canning methods, participants can make the most of their harvest and safely enjoy home-preserved foods throughout the year.
