MDARD ensures fair shopping for Michigan consumers

MDARD ensures fair shopping for Michigan consumers

By Andi Anderson

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) plays a vital role in protecting consumers during the busy holiday shopping season.

Through its Weights and Measures Program, MDARD ensures that Michigan shoppers get what they pay for in every transaction, from grocery store scales to gas pumps.

Betty the Elf recently visited MDARD to learn how its inspectors verify the accuracy of commercial measuring devices. By conducting routine checks on fuel pumps, digital checkout systems, and scales, MDARD safeguards consumers and ensures businesses comply with state and federal laws.

“MDARD helps shoppers get exactly what they pay for, whether it’s at the grocery store or gas station,” said Tim Boring, MDARD Director. This commitment ensures fairness and transparency in daily transactions across Michigan.

Helpful Tips for Consumers:

Check the scale: Verify weights at grocery stores match prices. Report any discrepancies to store staff or MDARD.

Inspect the pump: Look for certification stickers on gas pumps to confirm MDARD inspections.

Know your rights: Report suspected errors in weights or measures to MDARD’s Weights and Measures Program at 517-655-8202.

Guidance for Businesses:

Maintain equipment: Regular checks ensure scales and pumps operate within legal limits.

Train employees: Staff should understand proper equipment use, including tare weights.

Review operations: Conduct internal audits to ensure compliance with weights and measures regulations.

Craig VanBuren, MDARD’s Laboratory and Consumer Protection Bureau Director, emphasized the importance of accurate measurements for building trust between consumers and businesses. “Accurate measurements protect consumers and strengthen business operations, helping avoid costly errors.”

MDARD’s efforts demonstrate its dedication to fairness and transparency, ensuring both shoppers and businesses benefit from accurate and reliable transactions during the holiday season and beyond.
