Michigan apple growers are looking forward to a productive harvest season as orchards across the state report strong yields, excellent fruit quality, and harvest activities beginning earlier than usual. Industry representatives expect production to be above average, with some estimates suggesting the crop could surpass official projections.
According to the Michigan Apple Committee, most apple-growing regions in the state are experiencing favorable conditions that have supported healthy fruit development. Growers are reporting apples with good size, attractive color, and overall high quality. Harvest is running approximately 10 days ahead of the traditional schedule due to an earlier spring season.
Michigan remains one of the top apple-producing states in the United States, producing millions of bushels annually. Industry leaders believe this year's harvest could exceed the U.S. Department of Agriculture's estimate of 25 million bushels.
Steve Tennes, Owner of Country Mill Farms in Charlotte, highlighted the positive outlook for the state's apple industry.
“We’re blessed with an amazing apple crop,” Tennes said. “Our harvest is about 10 days early.”
The early harvest has required growers and related businesses to prepare sooner than expected. Orchards, cider mills, and farm markets have accelerated seasonal planning, including workforce recruitment and the production of popular fall products such as cider, donuts, and pies.
While apple growers are enjoying a successful season, other fruit producers have faced challenges. Extreme cold temperatures during January significantly affected Michigan's peach crop, resulting in major losses across the state.
“Michigan did lose virtually all the peaches because of January when it was negative 22,” he said.
Despite those difficulties, apple production has remained strong. The Michigan Apple Committee reports that Honeycrisp apples are expected to be particularly abundant this year. Favorable summer weather has helped improve fruit color, size, and overall quality. Early varieties such as Paula Red, Ginger Gold, and Gala are already being harvested, while Honeycrisp harvesting is expected to begin in late August.
Growers throughout the state are grateful for the healthy crop and optimistic about the season ahead.
“Right now, all Michigan apple growers are just happy to have a good harvest that we can share,” he said.
With apples arriving earlier than normal, growers are encouraging consumers to visit orchards sooner this year and enjoy fresh fruit directly from local farms.
“Don't wait till October. I'd get out in September and start picking apples at your favorite orchard,” he said.
Michigan growers harvest an average of 27.2 million bushels of apples each year. The state's apples are widely available through orchards, farm markets, cider mills, and grocery stores, making them an important part of both the agricultural economy and seasonal traditions.
