Field crop conditions across Southwest Michigan remain generally favorable as warm temperatures and limited rainfall support crop development and harvest activities. Recent weather has been mostly dry, with only a few light showers recorded in some areas. Forecasts indicate continued warm temperatures and below-average precipitation, providing suitable conditions for ongoing potato harvest and upcoming seed corn harvest operations.
Soybean fields are progressing through the late reproductive stages, with many fields moving from seed fill to full seed development. Growers are being encouraged to monitor fields for diseases such as red crown rot, sudden death syndrome, and brown stem rot, which can show similar symptoms. Early detection and proper diagnosis remain important for effective disease management.
Corn development continues across the region, with most fields ranging from the dough stage to the dent stage. Seed corn is drying down steadily, and harvest is expected to begin soon. Tar spot has recently been confirmed in portions of St. Joseph and Van Buren counties. However, experts indicate that late-season fungicide applications may provide limited benefit unless disease pressure becomes severe.
Potato production remains a key focus for growers. Late blight was recently detected in St. Joseph County, although no additional cases have been reported since the initial discovery. Farmers are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow sanitation measures, including cleaning footwear and equipment between fields, to help prevent disease spread.
Water management continues to be important as crops approach maturity. Corn and soybeans remain at peak water use, requiring approximately 1.2 inches of water per week to support growth and yield development. Maintaining adequate soil moisture can help reduce crop stress during these critical stages. Signs of water stress include rolled leaves in corn and grayish or turned leaves in soybean fields during evening hours.
Potato water requirements are gradually declining as the crop nears maturity. Fields in the tuber bulking stage generally require about 0.70 inches of water per week, while potatoes approaching senescence need approximately 0.35 inches per week. Irrigation schedules should be adjusted to match changing crop demand.
With limited rainfall expected and temperatures rising, growers are encouraged to use irrigation management tools and monitor field conditions closely. Efficient water use, disease scouting, and timely harvest operations will remain essential as Southwest Michigan producers work toward a successful end to the growing season.
