Michigan Awards $1.8 million To Boost Local Agriculture

By Andi Anderson

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is investing more than $1.8 million to strengthen agriculture and rural communities across the state.

Through its Underserved, Value Added and Regional Food System Grants program, 26 farms and food-focused organizations will share the funding to create jobs and expand local food production.

One recipient, Green Wagon Farms in Ada, will use a $100,000 grant to build three movable hoop houses. Co-owners Heather and Chad Anderson plan to grow salad greens, herbs, kale, and chard year-round with minimal heating, providing fresh food even in winter.

“We are hoping this will allow us to keep on a couple of our seasonal help and extend their employment through the year,” Heather said. The project is expected to create two full-time jobs.

Lakeshore Food Club in Hart also received funding to increase local food distribution to schools and food assistance programs in Mason, Lake, and Oceana counties. Plainsong Farm and Ministry in Rockford will invest in infrastructure to extend its growing season and improve access to healthy food and education for underserved families.

These grants highlight Michigan’s commitment to supporting small farms, strengthening food systems, and creating rural jobs. By helping producers expand year-round operations and reach more consumers, MDARD aims to boost the state’s agricultural economy while improving access to nutritious, locally grown food for communities across Michigan.
