Avian Influenza Confirmed in Allegan County Backyard Flock

Avian Influenza Confirmed in Allegan County Backyard Flock

By Andi Anderson

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a backyard flock in Allegan County. This marks the first detection of HPAI in the county’s poultry since the virus first appeared in Michigan in 2022.

The Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory identified the virus following an MDARD investigation. HPAI is a highly contagious disease that can spread through contact with infected animals, contaminated equipment, wild birds, or even on the clothing and shoes of caretakers.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk to public health remains low. However, residents are reminded to handle and cook all poultry and eggs thoroughly to prevent illness.

MDARD emphasizes that strict biosecurity is critical to protecting domestic flocks. Recommended steps include preventing contact between domestic and wild birds by bringing birds indoors or fully enclosing outdoor areas, washing hands before and after handling birds, disinfecting boots and equipment when moving between coops, and using well or municipal water for drinking. Poultry feed should be kept secure to avoid exposure to wild birds or rodents.

Backyard and commercial poultry owners should watch for warning signs such as sudden multiple bird deaths, a drop in egg production, reduced water consumption, diarrhea, sneezing, coughing, or an increase in sick birds. Suspected cases must be reported to MDARD at 800-292-3939 during the day or 517-373-0440 after hours.

Residents noticing unusual wild bird deaths are encouraged to report them through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Eyes in the Field app or by calling the DNR Wildlife Disease Laboratory at 517-336-5030.

MDARD continues to coordinate with state, federal, and local partners to contain the virus and provide updates. For ongoing information and guidance on biosecurity and personal protective equipment, visit Michigan.gov/BirdFlu or the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services website.
