The Michigan Agricultural Irrigation Water Use Efficiency Program is set to host an educational field demonstration designed to help farmers, agricultural professionals, and industry stakeholders improve irrigation practices and water management. The event will take place on August 11, 2026, at MSU South Campus and the MSU Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center in Lansing, Michigan.
The program aims to provide participants with practical knowledge and hands-on learning opportunities focused on improving irrigation efficiency. Water management has become increasingly important in agriculture, and the event will showcase technologies and techniques that can help farmers make the best use of available water resources while maintaining crop productivity.
A major feature of the demonstration will be presentations by Michigan State University Extension Agriculture Water Use Efficiency and Irrigation Educators. Attendees will have the opportunity to observe blue dye tracer demonstrations and precision irrigation technologies in action. These demonstrations will illustrate how water moves through irrigation systems and how advanced technology can improve irrigation accuracy and efficiency.
Participants will also be able to see the MSU Mobile Irrigation Lab operating in the field. The lab provides valuable information that helps growers evaluate irrigation system performance and identify opportunities for improvement. Such tools can support better water distribution and contribute to more effective crop management.
Throughout the event, experts will share practical strategies related to irrigation system management. Topics will include diagnosing irrigation issues, retrofitting older systems, optimizing equipment performance, and implementing water-saving measures. These educational sessions are intended to provide useful information that growers can apply directly to their farming operations.
The day's schedule will begin with the field demonstration from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by lunch at 12:00 p.m. An afternoon session from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. will include the WUAC Meeting, which is open to the public. While registration is not required for the meeting, organizers encourage participation to assist with event planning and room arrangements.
The initiative highlights the growing importance of efficient water use in agriculture and demonstrates Michigan State University's commitment to supporting farmers through research-based education and outreach. By introducing producers to the latest irrigation technologies and management practices, the program seeks to improve sustainability, conserve resources, and strengthen agricultural productivity.
