Field crop conditions across Southwest Michigan remain generally favorable despite limited rainfall during the past week. Precipitation varied significantly across the region, with some areas receiving little rain while others recorded more than half an inch. Weather conditions were mostly warm, sunny, and clear. Forecasts indicate increased chances of rainfall over the coming days, with nearly one inch expected in some locations, which would help improve current dry soil conditions.
Soybean development continues to advance. Most full-season soybean fields have entered the R5 growth stage, where seeds begin forming inside the pods. Fields still in flowering and early pod stages remain vulnerable to white mold, especially under irrigated conditions. Risk assessments showed higher white mold risk in irrigated soybeans and lower risk in non-irrigated fields.
Corn fields have largely moved into reproductive growth stages. Many fields are in the R2, R3, or R4 stages, where kernels develop from clear fluid-filled structures into soft, starch-filled kernels. Farmers are encouraged to continue scouting for tar spot, a disease that has already been confirmed in Calhoun and Jackson counties. Current tar spot risk remains low to moderate, although cooler conditions and irrigation can increase disease pressure.
Western bean cutworm activity has declined significantly in recent weeks. Adult moth counts have dropped across monitored counties, indicating that the highest-risk period has largely passed. However, growers with fields nearing tasseling are still advised to monitor for egg masses.
Potato crops are progressing through tuber bulking stages, while some early-season fields are approaching harvest. Growers continue monitoring fields for aphids and late blight. Disease models indicate mostly moderate late blight risk, with some areas experiencing lower risk levels.
Water management remains a major priority. Corn and soybeans are currently at peak water demand, requiring approximately 1.35 inches of water per week to maintain optimal growth and reduce stress. Potato water requirements are gradually declining as crops mature but still require careful monitoring.
Agricultural specialists recommend adjusting irrigation schedules to account for rainfall and avoid overwatering. Farmers can also utilize irrigation scheduling tools, including the updated Michigan State University Irrigation Scheduling Mobile App, which provides crop-specific recommendations based on weather, soil conditions, and growth stages.
Overall, Southwest Michigan crops continue to show strong progress. With crop development advancing, disease pressure remaining manageable, and beneficial rainfall expected, growers are focused on protecting yield potential through timely scouting, irrigation management, and pest monitoring throughout the remainder of the growing season.
