Running a farm requires passion, dedication, and thoughtful planning. For beginning farmers, these qualities are especially important because the first years often come with challenges such as learning farm production, finding land, building facilities, and securing financing.
To support new farmers as they navigate these early steps, Michigan State University (MSU) Extension and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), with support from GreenStone Farm Credit Services, have created a new resource designed specifically for beginning producers.
The newly developed Beginning Farmer Resource and Decision-Making Guide offers a clear pathway to important information and tools that can help new farmers succeed. The guide introduces users to essential farming topics, including production practices, business planning, land access, and how to connect with trusted agricultural partners.
It also directs readers to educational opportunities and decision-making tools that support long-term success in agriculture.
The official launch of the guide will take place at the 2025 Great Lakes Expo (GLEXPO). MSU Extension and USDA will host a special session on Tuesday, December 9, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
During this event, the development team will explain the purpose of the guide, walk attendees through its structure, and answer questions. Participants will also be encouraged to explore the guide and offer feedback on what topics they would like to see added in the future.
The guide is intended to be a living document, meaning it will be updated regularly as new challenges and opportunities arise for Michigan’s beginning farmers. Over time, additional topics and resources will be included to ensure the guide remains useful and relevant.
Following the launch, the guide will be available for free viewing and download on MSU Extension’s Beginning Farmer website. This easy access ensures that farmers across Michigan can benefit from the information, whether they are just starting their operation or planning their next steps.
