Farmers preparing for the upcoming cover crop season will have an opportunity to learn valuable management strategies through the Michigan State University (MSU) Extension Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series. The educational program is designed to provide timely information, expert recommendations, and practical solutions for current agricultural challenges.
The upcoming session will focus on cover crop management as planting season approaches. Whether producers are preparing to seed cover crops after wheat harvest or planning ahead for fields following corn and soybean harvest, the program will offer useful information to support effective decision-making.
During the event, Dr. Brook Wilke, Kellogg Biological Station Long-Term Agroecosystem Research Associate Director, will discuss proven cover crop practices that have delivered positive results for farmers. He will also present information on ongoing research exploring new cover crop options for Michigan agriculture. Among the topics covered will be winter camelina, an emerging crop that is attracting attention for its potential role in sustainable farming systems.
Following the cover crop presentation, MSU Extension Agricultural Climatologist Jeff Andresen will provide a weekly weather outlook. Weather conditions play a vital role in crop management decisions, and these updates help farmers better understand current conditions and potential impacts on their operations.
The session will conclude with an interactive question-and-answer period featuring MSU Extension specialists and educators. This segment allows participants to discuss concerns, seek expert guidance, and gain additional insights on topics related to crop production and farm management.
The Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series is held weekly throughout the growing season and has become a valuable educational resource for agricultural producers. Sessions are conducted every Thursday morning from March through September through Zoom video conferencing and phone access. The flexible format enables experts to address emerging issues and changing growing conditions as they occur.
Participants can join the program using a computer, tablet, smartphone, or traditional phone line. The virtual format provides convenient access to expert knowledge without the need for travel. In addition, attendees who participate in the live session may qualify for restricted use pesticide (RUP) credits and certified crop adviser (CCA) continuing education units.
Registration is simple and free. Participants only need to sign up once to receive joining instructions, Zoom access details, and weekly reminders. They can choose to remain subscribed or opt out at any time.
