According to Michigan State University Extension forage and livestock educator Michelle Sweeten, interest in soil health and regenerative agriculture is growing among farmers. The Soil Health Academy offers a valuable opportunity to learn these practices.
Last year, the academy was hosted by a farm in Michigan and attracted participants from across North America and even Europe. Farmers learned how to apply regenerative principles, such as adaptive grazing, to their own operations. Attendees appreciated the program's balance of classroom instruction and hands-on experience.
The Academy is designed for farmers and ranchers, but also welcomes researchers, educators, and advisors.
Each year, the Academy partners with farms across the US and Canada to offer a three-day intensive course. The curriculum showcases the host farm's experience in implementing regenerative practices specific to their situation.
This year's academy will be held at a farm in Michigan and will focus on advanced grazing techniques. Participants will learn about:
- The importance of observation
- Restoring ecosystems through grazing
- Selecting cattle suited to the environment
- Developing cattle to graze efficiently
- Improving pastures through grazing practices
- Using bale grazing for soil health
- Reducing inputs for better profitability
- Building farm resilience
Space is limited and registration is open now. Instructors include experienced regenerative farmers and ranchers.
