Michigan Potato Production Up 6 Percent

Michigan's 2019 potato crop is forecast to be 19.5 million hundredweight (cwt), up 6 percent from a year ago, according to Marlo Johnson, director of the USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. Planted acres, at 49,000, decreased 1,000 acres from last
year. Harvested acres, at 47,500, were down 500 from 2018. Average yield, forecasted at 410 cwt per acre, was up 30 cwt from the previous year and if realized would be a record high.
The first potato stocks estimate for the 2019 crop year will be released December 16, 2019.
Nationally, production of fall potatoes for 2019 is forecast at 422.5 million cwt, down 6 percent from 2018. Area harvested, at 938,900 acres, is down 7 percent from the 2018 estimate. The average yield forecast, at 450 cwt per acre, is up 7 cwt per acre
from a year ago.
