Michigan Celebrates Food and Agriculture Month

Michigan Celebrates Food and Agriculture Month

By Andi Anderson

Michigan is celebrating March as Food and Agriculture Month with the launch of the 2026 edition of the Michigan Agriculture magazine. The proclamation, made this week by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, highlights the importance of agriculture to the state’s economy.

The magazine, released by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), features stories about growers, producers, and business owners who contribute to Michigan’s second‑largest industry.

MDARD Director Tim Boring emphasized the department’s focus on supporting Michigan’s diverse agricultural landscape. He shared, "At MDARD, we're focused on showcasing and supporting the many ways our nearly $126 billion food, forestry and ag industry feeds Michiganders and fuels economies. Whether it's through publications like the magazine or at listening sessions our Farm to Family team is currently hosting around the state, MDARD is working to ensure Michigan remains one of the most agriculturally diverse states in the country. And while that work doesn't start and end in March each year, it's great to take time and celebrate how deeply agriculture is tied to Michigan's vibrancy."

The magazine’s release follows MDARD surpassing $250 million in grant awards since 2019. With continued bipartisan support, this momentum is expected to grow throughout 2026. Earlier this month, Director Boring introduced FarmStart, an upcoming program designed to support the next generation of agricultural professionals once it is approved in the state budget.

He also highlighted the Good Food for Michigan project, which aims to improve statewide procurement practices and increase use of local products.

This year’s magazine features several businesses that have benefitted from MDARD grants, including Cherry Republic, Inc., the cover story for the 2026 edition. Founder Bob Sutherland stated, "Farming and everything that revolves around the growing, processing, and manufacturing the foods we put into our bodies is the foundation of Michigan's economy. Cherry Republic is extremely proud to be a part of this industry, which is so diverse, which is full of so many wonderful people who love this land and this wonderful state as much as I do. While Cherry Republic is very connected to tourism, my heart is with the farmers, and always will be."

The cover unveiling took place at the company’s Frankenmuth location, with photos available on MDARD’s Facebook page. Copies of the magazine are available at Michigan Welcome Centers, MSU Extension offices, Conservation District locations, and participating businesses. MDARD will also distribute copies at events throughout the year.
