Weed Management Challenges That Lurk for 2020

Growers, consultants and agribusiness professionals are invited to participate in a series of eight online programs addressing field crop production and pest management on Monday evenings through March 30. Participants will learn how to enhance their corn, soybean, small grain and forage production systems in the coming season, and have an opportunity to ask questions of MSU agricultural experts. The live webinar presentations will run 7 to 8 p.m. EST each Monday evening.

One MDARD Pesticide Recertification Credit will be available through each live webinar for application to one of the following categories: Private Core, Commercial Core or Field Crops. Participants can view the programs independently online. Registration is $20 for the full series of eight webinars or $5 per individual webinar session.

Feb. 24 Weed Management Challenges That Lurk for 2020 Christy Sprague The 2019 field season is one that many of us would like to forget. High numbers of weed escapes and several unmanaged prevented plant acres will lead to greater weed management challenges as we head into the 2020 field season. This session will cover several options on how to best manage problem weeds, such as horseweed (marestail) and waterhemp, as next season approaches.

March 2 Emergent Pests and Diseases Chris DiFonzo & Martin Chilvers An update on the current status and 2019 research results with tar spot in corn will be shared. Insect pests such as corn earworm that have been making an appearance in parts of Michigan will also be addressed.

March 9 Nutrient Management to Improve Efficiency Kurt Steinke Results of 2019 nutrient management research will be shared with a focus on strategies to improve use efficiency of fertilizer inputs. Increasing nutrient use efficiency while implementing best management practices will improve the bottom line and lessen impacts on water quality and other environmental concerns.

March 16 Woodlot Management Julie Crick This talk will cover the basics of woodlot management to meet a variety of goals, including the production of non-timber forest products.

March 23 Hemp Production in Michigan James DeDecker & Eric Anderson Michigan agriculture is one year into the redevelopment of our state's hemp industry. Much has been accomplished, but the rules of the game continue to evolve. Join this session to learn the basics of hemp production as well as the latest information on regulations and MSU research to prepare for the 2020 growing season.

March 30 Farmers Helping Farmers with Farm Stress Roger Betz & Eric Karbowski Knowing the signs and symptoms of stress in agriculture is critical. The webinar will also describe warning signs of suicide and available resources to help support someone in need.
