Profitability is a key goal for every farm business, and for grain producers, strong marketing decisions play an important role in achieving that goal.
To support better pricing and marketing strategies, Michigan State University Extension has introduced Grain Gains, an online course designed to build knowledge and confidence in grain marketing.
Grain Gains is a self-paced virtual learning program that introduces the basic principles of marketing grain. The course helps participants understand how commodity markets work, how prices are formed, and how farmers can make informed pricing decisions.
It is suitable for beginners as well as experienced producers who want a refresher on important marketing concepts.
The course content is organized into four main learning units. These units cover the grain marketing environment, pricing decision tools, using decision charts and market scenarios, and creating a grain marketing plan tailored to individual farm needs.
Together, these lessons guide farmers through the process of developing a practical and effective marketing strategy.
Learning materials include short videos, easy-to-read articles, and hands-on activities that encourage active learning.
This mix of formats makes the course engaging and easy to follow for participants at different experience levels. The flexible structure allows learners to move through the content at their own pace.
Participants who complete all course modules and submit evaluations for each unit can earn a certificate of completion. While evaluations are required for the certificate, they are not necessary to access the learning materials. This allows participants to focus on learning without pressure.
A single registration fee provides lifetime access to the course and its content, making it a long-term resource for farm decision-making. Grain Gains is part of a broader education series focused on developing strong farm managers and future decision-makers.
This series supports individuals entering farming, transitioning into ownership, or preparing to manage more complex farm businesses.
Overall, Grain Gains helps farmers strengthen marketing skills, improve decision-making, and better manage price risk. By understanding markets and planning ahead, grain producers can take steps toward more stable income and long-term farm success.
