The 2025 National Food Hub Survey provides a detailed look at how food hubs across the country are operating and adapting in the years following the COVID 19 pandemic. The survey collected business data and real world experiences from the 2024 calendar year to better understand the current state of the food hub sector.
A total of 100 food hubs participated in the survey, representing 27 states and the District of Columbia. This wide geographic range allowed the survey to capture diverse operational models and regional experiences.
The findings focus on financial viability, day to day operations, and the role food hubs play in strengthening local and regional food systems.
Food hubs serve as important connectors between farmers, food producers, and markets. The survey shows that many hubs continue to face challenges related to distribution costs, staffing, infrastructure needs, and market access.
These challenges became more visible following disruptions in global food supply chains during the pandemic.
At the same time, the survey highlights opportunities for growth. Many food hubs are exploring expanded regional and national distribution, improved logistics, and stronger partnerships. The findings show that food hubs can play a key role in improving food access, supporting small and mid sized producers, and building more resilient supply chains.
The survey results were shared with the National Food Hub Network Community of Practice. Members of this group reviewed the findings and offered recommendations to help strengthen food hubs and address ongoing challenges. These recommendations focus on areas such as technical assistance, funding support, workforce development, and policy awareness.
The recommendations are available both as a separate resource and as part of the full survey report. They are intended to guide future investments and support programs for food hubs at local, regional, and national levels.
Overall, the 2025 National Food Hub Survey improves understanding of how food hubs operate and adapt in changing conditions. By identifying challenges, opportunities, and practical recommendations, the survey supports efforts to build a stronger, more resilient food system that benefits farmers, communities, and consumers across the country.
