The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has unveiled the recipients of the County Fairs and Expositions Grant, providing over $1.5 million in funds to 23 county fairs and expositions throughout the state. These grants aim to support essential capital improvements and building renovations on fairground facilities, bolstering the agricultural sector and fostering a lasting passion for farming and agri-food entrepreneurship among Michigan's youth.
MDARD Director Tim Boring emphasized the pivotal role county fairs and expositions play in connecting people with Michigan agriculture and cultivating future agricultural leaders. He expressed his confidence that these grants would not only benefit rural communities but also encourage the growth and learning of young individuals interested in the agricultural industry.
To be eligible for the capital improvement grant program, applicants must be fairs incorporated under Act 80 of 1855 or county-owned and operated fairs operating under Act 11 of 1929. Additionally, they should not have received a grant in the 2022 grant cycle and must have submitted all required annual reports for the past three years.
Among the grant recipients for the Fiscal Year 2023 funding cycle, various fairgrounds will undergo significant improvements. Projects range from horse arena enhancements in Alger County to bathroom renovations in Allegan County, and communication improvements in Barry County. These grants will also facilitate campground expansions, building improvements, electrical upgrades, and more across different counties.
In addition to the County Fairs and Expositions Grant, MDARD announced the recipients of the Shows and Expositions Grant. These grants provide financial support for livestock and commodity expositions, fairs, and festivals, primarily through premiums and promotional activities. Shiawassee County Fair and Isabella County Fair were awarded grants for their promotional support project and senior showman scholarships, respectively.
By investing in infrastructure and supporting agricultural events, these grants contribute to the growth of Michigan's agricultural communities, ensuring that county fairs and expositions remain vibrant platforms for education, community engagement, and the celebration of Michigan's agricultural heritage.
