FTC Investigation Targets Fertilizer Costs

FTC Investigation Targets Fertilizer Costs

By Jamie Martin

The Kansas Corn Growers Association has expressed support for a Federal Trade Commission investigation into fertilizer pricing practices and industry concentration. The announcement was made by FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson during a multi-state farmer gathering in Texas.

Fertilizer has become one of the largest cost challenges for farmers across the country. Since 2020, prices have increased significantly, placing financial pressure on agricultural operations. Data shows that fertilizer costs have risen faster than any other farm input, contributing to lower net farm income.

“I'm announcing that, on my order, the commission some time ago commenced a major industry-wide investigation into the precipitous rise of fertilizer prices in this country, which has affected so many of our nation's farmers, including everyone in this room, including the issuance of compulsory process,” said Chairman Ferguson.

“USDA data has shown the single largest increase in input costs of farmers across the United States since 2020 has come from fertilizer… These continued price increases are not something our nation, much less our farmers, can continue to ignore,” said Ferguson.

Kansas farmers have worked to bring attention to this issue. KCGA Secretary Tanner McNinch recently participated in discussions with policymakers, while farmer leader Grauerholz addressed concerns directly at the event.

Farm organizations have described the situation as a serious challenge for producers. During peak planting periods, many farmers have taken time away from fieldwork to highlight concerns about rising costs and lack of market competition.

The event also focused on major fertilizer companies and their impact on pricing. Reports indicate fertilizer prices have increased by more than 150 percent since 2020, while farm income has declined significantly from earlier highs.

Farmers from several states shared their experiences, explaining how high input costs and concentrated market power are affecting farm profitability. Leaders called on the FTC to act quickly to ensure fair competition and market transparency.

"Chairman Ferguson said what every farmer in that room already knew — this nation cannot continue to ignore what's happening in the fertilizer market,” said Texas Corn Producers Chairman Aaron Martinka.

“A fertilizer cartel has squeezed American agriculture to the breaking point, while driving up grocery costs for every family in this country. Farmers are fed up, and we are not going away. The FTC's investigation is a critical step toward restoring the fair, competitive marketplace that farm families and American consumers deserve,” said Martinka.

The FTC has encouraged farmers and suppliers to share information to support the investigation. Farm leaders believe this action could help restore stability in the fertilizer market.

Recent figures show increasing farm bankruptcies across regions, highlighting the financial strain on producers. Industry groups stress that addressing fertilizer pricing concerns is critical to protecting farm operations and maintaining food production systems.
