Michigan Senator Highlights Importance Of Agriculture Research And Farmer Support

By Andi Anderson

Michigan Senator Sam Singh has developed a strong understanding of agriculture through his years in public service. Representing an area with both a major university and active farming communities, he recognized the need to learn about agriculture early in his political journey.

Singh began his career in local government before moving to the state legislature. During this time, he actively connected with farmers, agricultural organizations, and university experts to better understand the industry. He explained his learning experience, saying, “I grew up in a suburban area, went to MSU and didn’t have an ag background,” Singh said. “But when I began representing the area and eventually joined the legislature, first for six years in the House and now in my Senate term, I wanted to ensure I understood everything happening at the university. I threw myself into that, and I had a lot of good local farmers who helped educate me about agriculture. It’s a challenging business, but it’s one that’s undeniably important to Michigan.”

Agriculture plays a major role in Michigan’s economy. It is the state’s second-largest industry, contributing more than 125 billion dollars annually. The state is also highly diverse in agricultural production, growing over 300 different commodities.

As a member of key committees related to natural resources and agriculture, Singh works on policies and funding decisions that impact farmers. He emphasized that farmers are facing several major challenges today. One of the first concerns he heard about was the need for skilled workers in the agricultural sector.

He further explained, “Early on in my time in the legislature, what I was hearing from farmers and food processors was about talent,” Singh said. Workforce shortages continue to affect farm operations and productivity.

In addition to this, climate change has become a serious concern. Singh noted that extreme weather conditions are affecting planting and harvesting schedules. Economic issues such as inflation and changes in trade policies also add pressure on farmers.

He stated, “Now, it’s very clear that climate has become an issue. Extreme weather has affected planting and harvesting seasons. The third area is a set of economic factors with changes in tariff policy, inflation and other costs. It’s impacting our farm communities in a variety of ways.”

Singh also highlighted the importance of support systems like MSU Extension and AgBioResearch. These provide farmers with guidance and solutions. He added, “There’s a need. There’s so much change that’s happening all across the country, so having a state resource like we do with MSU is very valuable.”

Overall, the senator stressed that research, education, and outreach are essential for supporting farmers and ensuring the future of agriculture.
