MSU Launches Broiler University Training For Small Scale Poultry Farmers

By Andi Anderson

Michigan State University Extension is introducing a new educational program called Broiler University to support people interested in broiler chicken production. This program is specially designed for beginners and small-scale poultry producers who want to learn the basics and improve their farming skills.

Broiler University provides practical and science-based training to help participants raise healthy chickens from start to market stage. The program focuses on simple methods and clear instructions, making it easy for learners to understand and apply the knowledge in real farming situations.

The online training sessions will be held every other Wednesday at 7 p.m. Eastern Time. The course runs from September 2 to October 28, 2026, and all sessions will take place live on Zoom. This format allows participants from different regions to join easily without traveling.

The course includes several important topics related to broiler production. Each session focuses on a key area. The first session covers housing and production basics. The second session explains nutrition and feeding strategies. The third session focuses on sourcing birds and incubation. The fourth session teaches health management and biosecurity practices. The final session explains farm business management and marketing strategies.

The program aims to provide a complete understanding of broiler farming. It supports learners in building confidence and gaining the skills needed to run a successful poultry operation. “This program is designed to meet learners where they are,” said Francine Czerniawski, Ph.D., MSU Extension poultry specialist. “Whether someone is raising their first batch of birds or looking to improve their current system, Broiler U provides clear, actionable guidance rooted in science and best practices.”

Participants who complete all sessions will receive a Certificate of Completion and special Broiler University items as a reward. The registration fee for the program is $40.

Broiler University comes at a time when interest in small-scale poultry farming is growing. The program offers a valuable opportunity for individuals to learn, improve their skills, and connect with experts and other learners in the field.
