Getting More Value from Cover Crops

According to the study conducted at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Southern Illinois University, cover crops have become an important part of modern crop production systems. Farmers use them to protect soil, improve nutrient use, suppress weeds, conserve moisture, and build long-term soil health.

Although the benefits are well known, producers still face important decisions regarding which cover crop species to use, how much seed to plant, and when to establish and terminate the crop.

Recent research provides new insights into how these decisions affect cover crop performance and farm profitability.

Biomass production is often used as a measure of cover crop success. Higher biomass levels typically improve erosion protection, weed control, nutrient retention, and soil organic matter development.

Research evaluating several common cover crop species found that earlier seeding and later termination consistently increased biomass production.

The additional growing time allowed plants to establish before winter and continue growth during favorable spring conditions.

Winter rye emerged as the strongest biomass producer among the crops studied. Its ability to withstand challenging weather conditions, develop deep roots, and grow quickly makes it a valuable option for many farming systems.

Triticale also showed strong performance because it shares several characteristics with rye.

The findings suggest that maximizing the number of growing days is one of the most effective methods for increasing cover crop growth.

While increased biomass offers many advantages, researchers caution against focusing exclusively on biomass production.

A separate study investigating different rye seeding rates found that increasing seeding rates resulted in greater biomass. However, higher rates did not always deliver additional agronomic benefits.

Nitrogen retention remained similar across low and high seeding rates, suggesting that farmers may not need the highest seeding rates to achieve nutrient management goals.

Researchers also observed reductions in corn stand counts as rye seeding rates increased. In some situations, lower seeding rates even generated stronger corn yields than higher rates.

These results demonstrate the importance of finding a balance between cover crop growth and future crop performance.

Researchers also compared standard and hybrid rye varieties.

Hybrid rye produced more biomass under some conditions, but this advantage was not consistent across all years. Nitrogen levels and crop yields remained largely unchanged between varieties.

Although final yields were similar, differences in stand establishment were observed. This indicates that variety choice can influence crop development and should be considered carefully.

Farm conditions, management goals, and production systems should guide variety selection rather than relying solely on biomass expectations.

The studies provide several practical lessons for producers considering cover crops.

First, planting earlier and terminating later generally increases biomass production. Second, winter rye remains one of the most reliable options for generating high biomass and delivering multiple soil health benefits.

Third, increasing seeding rates does not always improve results and may create unnecessary costs or affect crop establishment.

Finally, successful cover crop programs are built around clear objectives. Whether the goal is reducing erosion, improving nutrient use efficiency, suppressing weeds, or building organic matter, management decisions should align with those priorities.

Cover crops remain a powerful tool for improving farm sustainability. By selecting the right species, planting at the right time, and using appropriate seeding rates, producers can capture valuable benefits while maintaining strong cash crop performance.
