John Deere showcased its 2024 pre-production model year 8-R series tractor at the recent Commodity Classic, displaying the “autonomy prep option.”
John Deere Product Marketing Specialist Ryan Jardon said the tractor's advanced features bundles hardware components required to operate autonomously, including a large alternator backup, additional harnessing, and a rear implement Ethernet, which enables high-bandwidth data exchange between tractors and equipment.
According to Jardon, autonomy has become a hot topic in agriculture as farmers consider how to complete work quickly, especially when finding skilled labor can be a challenge. John Deere's autonomous concept relies on a 360-degree camera-based perception system that can identify anomalies in the field and stop or avoid them.
The technology upgrades include a new Gen-5 display offering a larger and crisper user interface and operates at a much faster speed than its predecessor. The display is paired with Deere’s new Starfire-7000 receivers integrated from the factory.
Jardon noted that the display would make it easier for farmers to interact with the technology and operate autonomously, including John Deere's autonomy system.
